Merseyside Police is getting ready to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors to Liverpool and New Brighton for the ‘Liverpool’s Dream’ Giants event.
The weekend will see the return of the Giants to Merseyside, who were last in the city for the highly successful Memories of August 2014 event.
The final part of the Giant Spectacular trilogy will start at 3pm on Thursday 4 October, when the Little Boy Giant will be 'sleeping' in St George's Hall.
The Giants, including the Giant, Little Boy Giant and Xolo the dog, will start their route through the city and New Brighton on Friday, with the three Giants continuing their journey around Liverpool on the Saturday. The event will culminate on Sunday afternoon with them walking together along the Strand.
Superintendent Mark Morgan, Silver Commander for the event, said: "Liverpool’s Dream is one of many big events to be taking place in Merseyside this year which the force has policed, following the success of the Tall Ships, Drift Shifters, Liverpool Pride and more.
"We are expecting hundreds of thousands of visitors and locals to be both sides of the River Mersey for this spectacular event and I'd like to extend them a very warm welcome to what should be a great four days.
"Officers will be visible throughout the event to help make sure everyone enjoys it safely.
"There will also be daily Project Servator deployments of both uniformed and plain clothes officers, a tactic used in other areas of the country and launched in Merseyside in July. it is designed to deter, detect and disrupt a range of criminal activity and will include visible armed police.
"I want to reassure people that this is not in response to any specific threat, but it’s never been more important to actively monitor any suspicious behaviour and we encourage the public to work with us to deter criminal activity.
"There are also some simple steps people can take to help protect themselves and their belongings:
- please always follow directions or instructions given by police officers and the event safety stewards and volunteers;
- don't leave your property, including bags and mobile phones, unattended and keep valuables close at all times;
- keep wallets, purses and cash safe and out of sight;
- keep children close by as there will be large crowds for the event;
- think about your journey into the city. The event will inevitably mean many roads are closed so you may want to think about public transport. If you do drive to Liverpool, use a designated car park and don't leave any valuables on display.
Superintendent Morgan added: "We will be on hand throughout the event to provide help, advice and reassurance and I would ask that everyone works with the organisers to help things run as smoothly as possible.
"Lots of the people helping the organisers are volunteers who are giving up their time to make the Giants another huge success for our area and I would urge people to treat them accordingly.
"It promises to be a very special four days and we are looking forward to playing our part in making it a memorable occasion.
"There will be road closures throughout the centre of Liverpool, and we join organisers in asking that people use public transport to see the event, with extra bus and train services laid on to help get the crowds to and from the city centre and New Brighton.
"Merseyside has a long history of putting on big events like this and we have been working with Liverpool City Council, Wirral Council and our other partners over a long period of time to make sure Liverpool's Dream is just as successful as previous times the Giants were in Liverpool.
"This is an opportunity for us to showcase our area and let the rest of the country and the world see what we already know - that Merseyside is a fantastic place to come and enjoy events like these."
