Staff from Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy’s office will be visiting Altcourse Prison today with other community safety partners to watch the prison’s restorative justice project, Supporting Offenders through Restoration Inside (SORI), in action.

The SORI project is a voluntary scheme for offenders and seeks to give them an insight into the consequences of their actions by allowing them to come face to face with victims of crime. Before this happens, prisoners work with staff to help them understand the impact their crimes can have. Today, partners from across the criminal justice field will be able to witness offenders meeting victims of crime for the first time.

Jane Kennedy said, “This type of project is extremely hard-hitting and emotive for the offenders who take part. It allows those who commit crime to see the devastating impact their actions can have on victims, something that is vital if we are ever going to break the cycle of offending. It is also fantastic to see so many partners taking an interest in this important work.”
