PCC statement following death of man in city centre

Merseyside / July 14

Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy said: “I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the young man who died last night. They will be devastated.

“I know Merseyside Police are supporting the family and have a dedicated officer in place.

“I have been briefed by Merseyside Police. The Force immediately referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), as they do with any death following contact with the police. The IPCC will now carry out a full investigation of the incident and their investigators have already visited the scene.

“Merseyside Police are cooperating fully with this independent investigation which will examine the full circumstances of what happened. The young man’s family can take some comfort from knowing it will answer any questions that they may have.

“Merseyside Police and I will do everything in our power to ensure the man’s loved ones and the local community are fully engaged. Merseyside Police and community leaders in Liverpool 8 have worked hard to build a strong relationship based on mutual confidence and trust.

“My focus at this time is on ensuring this man’s family receive all the support that they need.”
